A COUNTRY THAT HAS PRESERVED IT’S RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE

Botswana is a country where an array of tribes, each having transmitted from generation to generation, its culture, and traditions. Although their art and crafts, beliefs, ceremonies, legends, and rituals differ, they live in perfect harmony, united by their rich history.
The national language, the Setswana, serves to unite the Botswana’s nation as all the different ethic groups such as the Tswana who compose the majority of the population, the Bakalanga, the second largest tribe in the country, the Basarwa, Babirwa, Basubiya, Hambukushu… All have embraced it as the national language although the different tribes have preserved their ancestral dialects, adding to the diversity of the country.
Each tribe history is reflected in its music, dance, rituals, and colourful dresses. Botswana is also proud to be home of the San people, considered to be the oldest inhabitants of the Southern African region. Despite the passage of time, the San have retained most of their hunter as well as gatherer traditions and they are still crafting their archery using finely selected wood.

Discover Botswana and its tourism investment opportunities by attending the first-ever Botswana Tourism Investment Summit jointly organized by the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) and International Tourism Investment Corporation Ltd (ITIC) and in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group will take place on 22 to 24 November 2023 at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC), Botswana.ADVERTISEMENTSetswana is not only the unifying language of Botswana, but it has also become the word used to describe the rich cultural traditions of Botswana.
The country’s cultural heritage is celebrated every year during a commemorative festival called ‘Letsatsi la Ngwao’ which means in English, Botswana Culture Day.
Furthermore, another festivity, the Maitisong Festival, takes place in March every year and during nine days, people take to the streets to enjoy traditional music shows or to watch artists performing arts and cultural activities.
The country’s cuisine is a must to discover. Seswaa, salted mashed-up meat, is regarded as the national dish of Botswana and is unique to the country. However, other delicacies and platters of the Southern African region are readily available in the restaurants and lodges all over the country such as the ‘bogobe’ (porridge and millet sorghum) or the ‘miele pap pap’, imported maize porridge.
In the rural areas, life in Botswana still evolves around the massive Baobab trees. They are one of the country’s iconic symbols and under which in ancient times, important local issues were discussed and addressed but also, wise decisions taken for the benefit of the community as well as rulings were handed down by the respected elders of the village.

    Robert the Bruce’s 750th Anniversary
Robert the Bruce is a ruler which the history books remember; many regard him as being Scotland’s most successful monarch. With the 750th anniversary of his birth coming up on 11 July 2024 there has never been a better time to follow in the footsteps of Scotland’s most famous king by exploring the Robert the Bruce Trail in the South of Scotland or other locations thought to be connected to him such as Scone Palace and Dunfermline Abbey. Val Thorens Voted ‘Best Ski Resort in the World’ for the 8th Time in 11 Years at World Ski Awards

Val Thorens, the highest ski resort in Europe at 2,300m, has again been named ‘Best Ski Resort in the World’ at the annual World Ski Awards, the only global initiative to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in ski tourism.
This is the 8th time in 11 years it has won which reflects the passion that consumers have for Val Thorens given they’re actively involved in the selection process. Verbier and Kitzbühel are the other destinations to have awarded this accolade in the past decade, too.  In addition, Val Thorens has been awarded ‘Best Ski Resort in France’ 10 times.
Val Thorens wins so often as it has a loyal and enthusiastic clientele, guaranteed snow, state-of-the-art infrastructure and a “Live United” philosophy which makes the Savoyard resort unique.
Every year, 216 destinations from 26 counties apply and try to win awards in various categories. More than 2.3 million people – both consumers and ski industry professionals – then vote online for their favorite resort.
Vincent Lalanne, director of Val Thorens Tourist Office, says, “This award represents the hard work of all resort staff whom I would like to salute for their involvement, teamwork and imagination. We’re very proud to win again and I would like to thank our customers from all over the world for their unfailing support. We’re dedicated to delivering excellence and continually developing the resort to ensure a fantastic holiday experience for everyone.”ADVERTISEMENTThis season, Val Thorens will open early on November 18, 2023 due to the signifiant early snowfall.
The resort celebrated its 50th anniversary last season. It opened the €40 million Le Board sports, wellness and business centre which is a marquee new development right in the heart of the village. Other major investments include two new state-of-the art lifts linking Val Thorens with Orelle which are now in operation in both winter and summer. Last season, a Perspex tunnel was built so that foot passengers even avoid getting their feet wet as they travel between the resorts.
Val Thorens is part of Les 3 Vallées, the largest interconnected ski area in the world with 600 km of pistes and 162 lifts.
