    LOS ANGELES UNION STATION TRAIN FESTIVAL 2023: A CELEBRATION OF PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE

    Los Angeles Union Station, with presenting partners Metro, Amtrak and Metrolink, will welcome train enthusiasts, history aficionados, industry professionals and commuters of all ages to learn, experience and celebrate all things rail at the much-anticipated Los Angeles Union Station Train Festival 2023: A Celebration of Past, Present & Future. Train Festival 2023, set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 9 and Sunday, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, will treat visitors to railroad equipment tours and displays, model train displays, architecture, arts and culture tours, information booths, music, giveaways, eateries, amenities, ShopLAUS and more.
    “Los Angeles Union Station is thrilled to welcome new interactive and engaging activations to Train Festival 2023. We’re excited to provide train fans, rail experts and the local community with an experience that truly encapsulates the timeless wonders and legacy of train travel,” said George Meyer, VP and General Manager at Los Angeles Union Station.
    Guests will have the opportunity to take exclusive tours and view displays of railroad equipment on tracks 13, 14, and 15. From the world-renowned Steam Locomotive Santa Fe 3751 of the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society (SBRHS), which pulled the first named passenger train into Los Angeles Union Station in 1939, to modern day passenger and freight equipment, attendees will be able to walk through rail history and witness the technological advances spanning more than 100 years. Featured displays will include Amtrak passenger equipment, a BNSF Railway freight locomotive and the Southern California Railway Museum’s Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe (ATSF) 5704 diesel, which was one of five locomotives painted in a patriotic red, white, and blue scheme to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the United States. Attendees can also admire an LARail.com vintage private car, the Tioga Pass, which was built in 1959 by the Canadian National Shops designed for railroad executives and the Pacific Railroad Society’s National Forum, a 1956 Pullman sleeping car. Metrolink’s F125 Locomotive will also be on display while the company’s Talgo-Rehabilitated Bombardier Train Car and Rotem Cars will be available for attendees to tour inside.
    In Union Station’s Ticket Concourse, guests can immerse themselves in five masterfully constructed and uniquely designed model train displays created by some of the premiere model train clubs in Southern California. Join Group 160 NTRAK Club, Orange County Module Railroaders, Inc., Southern California Traction Club, Southern California Z Scale Model Railroading Group, as well as The Toy Train Operating Society’s Southern Pacific Division and The Train Collectors Association’s Western Division to celebrate this dynamic and family-friendly hobby. Group 160 NTRAK Club’s NTRAK Modular Model Train Layout showcases a 16’ by 28’ three-track mainline layout with a working tornado module, scenery reflective of the US Pacific Northwest along with industry and rural scenes, 40+ car long trains, and an opportunity for visitors to operate a train around the layout – while Orange County Module Railroaders, Inc.‘s HO Scale Model Railroad features two main lines and various other trackage across scenery of building, foliage, vehicles and pedestrians highlighting various steam and diesel-era trains and locomotives including Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner. Attendees won’t want to miss Southern California Traction Club’s incredible Downtown Streetcar Display featuring a highly detailed HO scale downtown scene with tall buildings, complete with operating streetcars and subway trains. Additional model train displays include Southern California Z Scale Model Railroading Group’s ZoCal Modular Railroad Group showcasing an assortment of train lines with various types of freight and passenger controlled by Digital Command Control (DCC) allowing control over each individual train engine separately, as well as The Toy Train Operating Society’s Southern Pacific Division and The Train Collectors Association’s Western Division, which will display The Toy Train Operating Society’s Tinplate Pacific Railroad featuring toy trains in Standard Gauge, O-Gauge and S-Gauge from Lionel, Marx, American Flyer and other manufacturers.
    Train Festival 2023 attendees will also be invited to celebrate architecture, arts and culture through group and self-guided tours of the station facilitated by partners from California Preservation Foundation (CPF), Los Angeles Conservancy (LAC) and Metro Art. Angelenos and tourists alike can make their way through Union Station to learn about its impact as an architectural marvel, historic landmark, Hollywood film location favorite and buzzy hub for those traveling around, to or from Los Angeles. For a unique guided experience, join California Preservation Foundation for the statewide program, Doors Open California, by participating in one of four Los Angeles Union Station Hidden Gems Tours – a guided walking tour held at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily, conducted by the director of construction and restoration.     CHTA Announces the Return of CHIEF to Miami this year

    The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) has announced the return of the Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF), to be held November 29 to December 1, 2023, at the Hilton Miami Airport Blue Lagoon.
    CHTA President Nicola Madden-Greig said the Caribbean region’s premier engagement, networking, education, and best practice sharing event for the hospitality industry professionals is back, and this year delegates will explore the theme “A New Era of Caribbean Tourism: Balancing Tradition, Technology, and Community”.

    2 Michelin star chef, Edwin Vinke has launched a brand-new dining concept in the heart of Ibiza’s fortified Renaissance town, Dalt Vila. 30 years after launching his award-winning restaurant De Kromme Watergang
    Vinke’s new restaurant 1742 is a modern interpretation of Ibiza’s traditional island cuisine. Nestled in the heart of Ibiza’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, 1742 recognises the influence the island’s unique history and Mediterranean geography have had on its unique cultural fabric and gastronomic identity. Fusing tradition with modern culinary methods, Vinke’s 1742 showcases local produce and creates undiscovered flavours with a progressive zero-waste approach. In each dish, by-products are reimagined to deliver an unparalleled sensory experience. The new restaurant is home to Ibiza’s most impressive wine cellar. Located in the Dalt Vila’s Palacio Barjardi, 1742’s historic cellar provides the perfect climate for fine wines such as Vega Scilia’s beautifully aged Unico and A.     The Menu
    Swapping the North Sea for the Mediterranean, Vinke’s 1742 nature-driven menu is designed with ample respect to the water’s provisions. Vinke, Gault Millau’s Chef of the Year 2011, takes a unique meditative culinary approach. Drawing upon his own spiritual practices, Vinke’s 1742 kitchen is one of almost silence. Food is prepared with Vinke’s ethos in mind: “Pleasure, Passion and Perfection”.
    The menu at 1742 takes diners on a culinary journey from seabed to shore. On arrival, guests are greeted with a delicate amuse bouche perfectly designed to awaken the senses. Starting with oysters found on the Mediterranean bed, followed by fruits de mer, guests then indulge in a dish showcasing Ibiza’s local island fish, Rojta. Also known as scorpion fish, Rojta is a Mediterranean fish commonly found amongst the sea’s coral reefs. Showcasing the white isle’s wonderful native produce, Vinke’s Rojta is a beautiful hybrid of flakey white fish with a tender density not too dissimilar to lobster. The local fish is prepared with delicate seasoning from herbs and spices brought to Ibiza from the island’s many settlers. Vinke’s Rojta is an unmissable creation that captures the island’s melting pot of cultures. Remaining on the seabed, diners then sample fresh blue lobster, beach crab and cuttlefish before sampling meet influences to the island.ADVERTISEMENTThe Wine

    From Spain’s innovative modern winery, Valduero, 1742 offers Valduero Dos Anos. A true collector’s item, Valduero Dos Anos is aged for 4 years in the barrel and made with 100% Tempranillo, giving way to an elegant wine with light aromas of tobacco and leather.
    Founded in 1984 by sisters Yolanda and Carolina, the Valduero team are first-generation winemakers and pioneers of innovation, creating world-class wine using sustainable and energy-saving techniques and engineering.  Valduero has become a firm favourite of chefs, celebrities and critics globally.     This relaxed, modern approach to dining contrasts with the extravagant grandeur of Palacio Barjardi. 1742 is a fine dining experience with a difference. There are no white tablecloths, swinging service doors or torque blanches. Rather, at 1742 you will find an open kitchen with Vinke and his team preparing dishes in simple aprons, Vinke’s sleeves turned up to expose a tattoo sleeve of marine life. The perfect blend of old meets new, ambient light projections flicker lightly on the restaurant’s ancient walls, a nod to the island’s notoriety as a nightlife destination. And once dessert is done, guests are welcomed to experience Ibizan nightlife in the heart of the historic Dalt Vila, with a private DJ taking to the decks.

    Jamaica to Host 42nd Caribbean Travel Marketplace

    Jamaica has been selected to host the 42nd edition of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s (CHTA) Caribbean Travel Marketplace on May 20-22, 2024, the CHTA announced over the weekend.The CHTA’s most important event brings together buyers and sellers of the Caribbean’s tourism products and services. The Caribbean Travel Marketplace was last held in Jamaica just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019.
    Next year’s event will be held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre.
    “We at CHTA are delighted that Jamaica is building on the enormous success of our Marketplace this year in Barbados because it is where deals are made, allowing new and established buyers from all corners of the world to access a rich offering of travel products and experiences throughout the Caribbean,” CHTA President Nicola Madden-Greig said in a statement.According to Madden-Greig, the marketplace is “where those of us in the industry meet, collaborate, strategize and get smarter about how best to share the Caribbean experience with visitors from around the world.”
    Marketplace 42 will offer some new elements designed to enhance the overall experience that the CHTA President likened to the Caribbean Travel Forum & Awards.The Forum will take place on Monday, May 20, just ahead of the official start of Marketplace.     Europe’s Heat Wave Prompts Italy’s “Extreme” Health Alert

    The European Space Agency’s climate experts have predicted that Sicily and Sardinia might possibly see the warmest temperatures ever documented in Europe, with highs of 48 degrees Celsius. Similarly, temperatures in Rome might reach 44 degrees Celsius.In addition, officials in Italy have issued a level two heat advisory for nine more municipalities. The Ministry of Health released a statement urging citizens to drink plenty of water, reduce the size of their meals, and seek shade when outdoors.     European Space Agency forecasters have also warned that the continent’s heat wave is only getting started, with scorching weather anticipated in Spain, France, Germany, and Poland. The warning was issued as the continent is gearing up for a record-breaking number of visitors this summer season.
    Due to the extreme heat, Greek authorities closed the Acropolis of Athens for a second day. The Spanish government issued a warning that the heat wave was not just impacting the country’s southern regions, as is usually the case, but was also spreading northward into the country’s more temperate climate. Cities like Seville, Cordoba, and Granada in the south have seen temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher. Highs of 36 degrees Celsius have been reported by the Spanish national meteorological service on the Mediterranean Sea tourist island of Mallorca. Meanwhile, even northern regions like Navarra, known for its moderate climate, are experiencing temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius. The regional administration of the Canary Islands tweeted that a wildfire had broken out on La Palma Island, displacing 500 residents.
    Over 61,000 people perished from the extreme heat in Europe this summer, making it one of the worst natural disasters in recent history. This year’s heat wave, which the Italian Meteorological Society has dubbed “Cerberus”, has caused even more concern for people’s health, particularly as it is occurring during Europe’s tourist season peak.
    However, extreme weather is not exclusive to Europe. More than 90 million people have been put on high alert due to the deadly heat wave that has been affecting the western United States for the last few weeks.
