    Hamad International Airport Launches Next-Gen Wi-Fi 6

Hamad International Airport (DOH) has announced the launch of the next generation Wi-Fi service, empowered by Cisco technologies, across its state-of-the-art terminal to further enhance the airport’s passenger experience.Through ubiquitous high-speed connectivity, passengers who are traveling via Qatar will be able to easily connect with family, friends, and business contacts.
    High Performance Wi-Fi 6 Coverage
Meticulous design studies were undertaken to achieve seamless Wi-Fi coverage from the curbside of the terminal to the aircraft, and to provide adequate capacity and speed to meet and exceed our passenger’s needs. Special attention was paid to the terminal areas where a high number of passengers spend a significant amount of their time, such as boarding gates, shopping areas, and food courts.
Hamad International Airport (DOH) has deployed Cisco Wireless technologies, including indoor and outdoor WiFi6, to support the needs of an increased flow of passengers over the next years in Qatar.
Further to the high-performance wireless connectivity across the entirety of the airport, it will also lay foundation for enhanced operations with better insights providing amazing experience for passengers.ADVERTISEMENTTransforming Customer Experience with Optimized Connectivity
With this investment, Hamad International Airport (DOH) will be able to better understand how passengers move through the airport, including dwell times and traffic flows. This will help optimize retail opportunities and allow passengers to consistently have great experiences.
Millions of visitors from across the world travelling through Hamad International Airport can now connect using single-step authentication methods by simply sending a “WhatsApp” message or scanning their printed boarding pass. Usage statistics in the initial days have shown that over 60% of the visitors prefer the new frictionless connection options. During FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, more than 2 Million Passengers enjoyed the new Wi-Fi service by seamlessly consuming over 1 PB (Peta Byte) of content from the internet.
Enabling the Future of Digitized Airports
Thanks to technologies embedded into the new Wi-Fi system at the airport, Hamad International Airport’s mobile app ’HIA Qatar’ will deliver improved location-based services. These services include real-time wayfinding for areas like baggage claim, direction to boarding gates and food – as well as beverage and retail offers from Qatar Duty Free (QDF). To ensure that travelers benefit from the best deals, the ’HIA Qatar’ app alerts users when walking past outlets with ongoing sales and promotions. This capability will in future enable new operational uses such as efficient and timely allocation of resources, including wheelchairs, buggies and a variety of aviation equipment and tools.
In addition, improved connectivity is provided for various airport stakeholders and partners, who increasingly rely on wireless connectivity and operational mobile apps for their field staff to contribute to the world-class operations at Hamad International Airport (DOH).
Commenting on the announcement, Hamad International Airport’s Senior Vice President of Technology and Innovation Suhail Kadri said: “As the world’s best airport, we are continually investing in innovative technologies and solutions to provide our millions of visitors from around the world with easy access and the most seamless of experiences.
The launch of next-gen Wi-fi services at Hamad International Airport not only fits well within our strategy of seamless travel but also strengthens our commitment to continue to be the leading global digital airport.”
Hasan Khan Managing Director of Cisco Qatar commented: “We are proud to support Hamad International Airport’s strategic business goals as it continues to grow and introduce new services to effectively transform the passenger experience. Cisco has a strong technological expertise providing secure, intelligent, and seamless connectivity for various airports across the world; and we’re happy to bring these capabilities to Qatar’s flagship airport.”

O’Hare International Airport Unveils Modernized Terminal 5 with 25% Increased Capacity

Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot joined the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) last week to celebrate the grand opening of the new eastern extension of Terminal 5, a major milestone in the $1.3B, four-year investment to expand and modernize the key gateway at O’Hare International Airport.“O’Hare is a significant economic engine for our entire region and the first impression of Chicago for millions of visitors every year,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “That’s why we are especially proud to cut the ribbon to this expanded, modernized Terminal 5, which represents a major milestone in O’Hare’s curb-to-gate transformation into one of the great airports of the 21st century under the O’Hare 21 capital improvement program. Importantly, this project will also build on my administration’s and CDA’s ongoing commitment and efforts to create equitable, economic opportunities for Black and Brown residents, businesses, and construction and development firms.”
“With new gates, increased passenger amenities, a more efficient baggage handling system, and expanded security checkpoints and customs facilities, the state-of-the-art Terminal 5 of today is equipped to handle the growing demand we expect O’Hare to see in the coming years while offering an improved passenger experience,” CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee said. “These crucial infrastructure investments will ensure that O’Hare maintains the capacity it needs to move forward with other O’Hare 21 work with minimal impact to operations.”
Crews broke ground in 2019 on the modernization of Terminal 5, with construction led by Austin Power Partners. The project increased the terminal’s capacity by 25% to improve efficiency and reduce delays. Passenger amenity space was increased by 75%, and the existing building was expanded by approximately 350,000 square feet, with additional renovations to 750,000 square feet of the existing structure.
The firms HOK and Muller & Muller Ltd. led the light-filled redesign of the facilities, maintaining the integrity of the terminal’s original 1993 design while modernizing it for the 21st century. The vaulted ceilings welcome natural light and offer views across the airfield toward the Chicago skyline.
Sustainable technology has been incorporated throughout the terminal, including 40,000 square feet of high-performance glass, water efficiency measures that exceed Sustainable Airport Manual requirements, and new Energy Star roofing.ADVERTISEMENTThe L-shaped East Concourse extension added 10 new wide-body gates, nine of which utilize multiple aircraft ramp systems, or “MARS gates.” These MARS gates allow the flexibility to accommodate larger, next-generation wide-body aircraft or more traditional narrow-body aircraft. The space it takes to park two wide-body planes can be repurposed as necessary to fit three narrow-body aircrafts.
Ten renovated gates opened in the western wing of Terminal 5 in October 2022 as the new home for Delta Air Lines, which shifted operations from the carrier’s longtime home in Terminal 2. Delta’s move also included the construction of a new Delta Sky Club, located between Gates M11 and M14, with more than four times the capacity of its former club in Terminal 2. Chicago’s Sky Club is also Delta’s first to feature boarding on select flights from two gates inside the lounge.
The Terminal 5 project also included a partnership between the CDA and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) on a $3.5M public art plan as part of the Terminal 5 expansion and modernization, the City’s largest single acquisition of works by Chicago artists in 30 years. Commissions are planned across the FIS Arrival Corridor, the Baggage Claim area, and the Passenger Level NConcourse.
The first installation of this project will be a monumental installation by artist jina valentine titled “a murmuration” in the Passenger Level Concourse, followed by an exhibition featuring 17 artist commissions titled “Del Otro Lado / The Other Side” in the Terminal 5 Arrivals Hall. “Immigrant Owned,” a series of large-scale lightboxes by photographer Jonathan Michael Castillo, will be completed and unveiled later this year.
The expanded and renovated areas of Terminal 5 will also be home to a wide array of new concessions. In May 2022, the Chicago City Council approved the largest set of concessions agreements at O’Hare in more than a decade, including several local offerings such as Butcher and the Burger, Hampton Social, Bar Siena, Sparrow Coffee, and more. These agreements will achieve an Airport Concession Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (ACDBE) participation rate of 40%, exceeding the CDA’s goal of 32% and the nationwide goal of 10%, set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The new concessions are expected to open in phases throughout 2023. Overall concessions in Terminal 5 currently achieve an ACDBE participation rate of 44.8%, up from 33.5% at the project’s start in 2019.
The overall Terminal 5 project reflected the CDA’s ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in airport contracting, achieving a participation rate of 37% for certified minority-owned, woman-owned, or disadvantaged businesses contracting with the project’s Construction Manager at Risk (CMR), Austin Power Partners (APP).
In June 2022, crews also broke ground on a new, six-story parking garage at Terminal 5 to replace the current surface Parking Lot D. When completed in 2024, the new garage will more than double the amount of available parking at the terminal and expand capacity to offer a mix of short- and long-term parking options, like those available at the airport’s main terminals. The garage will also feature parking assist technology and electric vehicle charging stations. Additional landside improvements will include re-striping of airport roadways to rebalance lane capacity and an expansion of the curbside area, including physical drive lanes, dedicated entry and exit roadways, escalators, and pedestrian areas.
The Terminal 5 Garage project is led by joint venture AECOM Hunt Clayco BOWA as Construction Manager at Risk (CMR) and supported by 60 participating contractors, including 14 minority-owned firms and 14 women-owned firms.
The work at Terminal 5 is part of the broader O’Hare 21 capital improvement, Chicago’s vision of a curb-to-gate transformation of O’Hare’s terminal complex into a modern, efficient global hub to serve the needs of the traveling public through the 21st century. Learn more at ORD21.com.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Launches ‘Center Stage’ Music Program with Abbey Road Studios

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is delighted to announce the creation of ‘Center Stage’ – an exciting new music program that supports the talents of tomorrow, pairs emerging and established artists and provides studio time and suite time to foster musical collaboration and mentor the creative process.Over the next three years, Fairmont, with the support of Abbey Road Studios, the most famous recording studio in the world, will provide 1000 hours of studio time and 1000 hours of suite time to up-and-coming artists across the globe, while documenting their artistic journeys – from writing and recording to live performances.
The Center Stage program will launch at the Beaufort Bar at The Savoy, A Fairmont Managed Hotel, in London, on February 8th, 2023, featuring special performances by Rema and 0207 Def Jam’s rising star, Debbie. At the event, Fairmont will lift the curtain on the music writing process by sharing a documentary of its first collaboration – including the evolution of a track during a studio session, delving into the meaning behind the song, and where the artists found inspiration. The chronological docuseries will begin in The Royal Suite by Gucci at The Savoy, highlighting the way brilliance often strikes in meaningful settings. The artists are then followed to Abbey Road Studios’ Writing Rooms where they shape their creation with the help and support of their paired mentor and Abbey Road’s world class engineers and experts.
“Fairmont is where guests experience the grandest of feelings. We are passionate about delivering authentic experiences that share the best that our destinations have to offer – and music plays a significant role in making those connections,” said Mansi Vagt, Global Vice President Fairmont Brand, Accor. “Music is highly emotive and can be a powerful way that travelers connect to their favorite memories. Through our work with Abbey Road Studios we look forward to tapping into many diverse genres of music that will resonate with our Fairmont guests and our local communities around the world.”
Nigerian singer and rapper Rema has been making waves around the world with his gently provocative sound. Rema’s signature Afrorave style weaves African, Arabian and Indian influences for an upbeat sound that reverberates with good vibes and rave energy. Having learned to sing as a child in church, Rema got his first break in 2018 when D’Prince spotted him freestyling to “Gucci Gang” on Instagram, leading to a record deal with Jonzing World. Following his first breakout hit, “Dumebi”, Rema gained global attention when his track “Iron Man” was included on Barack & Michelle Obama’s Summer Playlist 2019. The following year, “Beamer” was selected for the FIFA 2021 soundtrack, and in 2022 he collaborated with Selena Gomez for a remix of his hit single “Calm Down”, which debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 and is No.6 in the UK Official Charts.
“Center Stage is an incredible program that Fairmont and Abbey Road Studios have put together, and I’m honored to be included as a performing artist,” said Rema. “Using their power and resources to reach out to young talented artists – not only giving them a platform to access the world with their music, but helping them along the way to shape and refine their sound, their vision, and their community. It’s very inspiring, and I love being a part of it.”ADVERTISEMENTCenter Stage is designed to not only identify new musical talent, but also offer tools and initiatives to support emerging artists during the launch and development of their careers. This includes access to Abbey Road Studios’ annual Amplify festival – designed to inspire and empower the next generation of creators featuring masterclasses, interactive sessions, workshops, Q&As and live talks with industry leaders who share their knowledge and provide insight into the music business. Fairmont and the Center Stage artists will also have access to Abbey Road’s modern tracking studios, the Gatehouse and Front Room, which were built for the next generation of music artists, working alongside Abbey Road’s world class engineers.
“Fairmont has a long history of supporting the arts and musicians, which is why we are happy to support Center Stage and its efforts to find and develop new and exciting talent” said Jeremy Huffelmann, General Manager, Abbey Road Studios. “We believe it is so important to cast a wide net and foster emerging artists from around the world who might not otherwise have a platform – helping them to reach higher levels in their careers and providing them with opportunities to showcase their talent.”“Tapping into Abbey Road’s resources and network will enable us to create a relevant and innovative music mentorship program in many of our global destinations,” said Ralitza Iordanova, Vice President Global Brand Partnerships, Accor. “We are confident we can make a meaningful difference to the lives and careers of many up-and-coming artists that might not have otherwise been able to share their music with the world.”
Artists will be able to apply for opportunities using Gixon. The fully automated delivery app, having recently launched in London in October 2022, aims to change the way people book and consume live music, and provides reliable opportunities and income to artists and musicians. Gixon will help curate a local roster in each location where the program is implemented, as well as providing a pool of talent for Fairmont hotel teams to enrich their entertainment offer by booking local artists to perform at their hotels.
For generations, Fairmont suites have hosted countless music artists, icons, stars and celebrities, while providing guests with unforgettable moments of music. Some say that romance found its true heart in 1962, when Tony Bennett crooned “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” at Fairmont San Francisco for the very first time. From the Celine Dion Suite at Fairmont Le Château Frontenac; the Quincy Jones Suite at Fairmont Le Montreux Palace; to John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s Bed-In for Peace in suite 1742 at Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth, some of music’s most influential performers have been inspired during their stays at Fairmont.
Artists in the Center Stage program will have access to their own ‘suite time’ at one of several extraordinary Fairmont properties around the world. Participating hotels include:

Acacia Africa Adds Nine Countries To Its Small Group Tours

Travellers opting for a 2023 small group experience with leading safari specialist Acacia Africa, have an additional nine countries to choose from. Lesotho, Eswatini, Malawi, Uganda, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia now feature on the operator’s Small Group Adventure Camping and Small Group Adventure Accommodated tours, with each trip taking a maximum of 16 people. To mark the news, Acacia will be offering discounts of 15% on Small Group Adventure Camping Tours and 10% on Small Group Adventure Accommodated tours if booked before February 28. The discount will be available on all 2023 scheduled departures and is subject to availability.
Arno Delport, Marketing Manager at Acacia Africa comments, “We have expanded and broadened our small group destinations and realised the demand for ‘TRUE’ small group travel in Africa. Priced from only £602pp for a four-day Kruger Safari, every Small Group Adventure is packed with immersive experiences from seeing the wildlife to engaging with local communities. We will continue to run these trips in our custom built vehicles – the extra space and added comfort allows clients to really stretch out on longer drives and enjoy unequalled window access throughout. All the memorable African experiences of Acacia’s Adventure Tours will remain – but without the crowd!”
“2023 is poised to be an exciting year for Africa, with travellers keen to explore the continent’s classic safari destinations, including Kenya’s Masai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti. Bucket lists are also expanding, and we are seeing growing interest for more out of the way places, for example, Eswatini and Lesotho. Overall travellers are more confident about booking longer trips, and well ahead of their departure, the pent up demand for travel to Africa refueling the coffers of worthy conservation and community projects. Our desire to travel is also at an all time high with many of us willing to cut back on costs in order to enjoy our dream safari, our affordable Small Group Adventures helping to make those dreams a reality.”

The first country in Africa to offer a ‘digital nomad’ visa, Namibia is destined to be a popular destination in 2023. According to Acacia, remote working has boosted bleisure travel, and the opportunity to take several trips in the Land of the Brave, and across neighbouring countries, over a six month period is an inviting prospect. The cinematic sense of wonder afforded to travellers journeying across Namibia is compelling. Etosha’s otherworldly salt pan, the Fish River Canyon (regarded as Africa’s very own Grand Canyon), Spitzkoppe’s dramatic bald granite peaks, Dune 45, Deadvlei, and the vast dunes of Swakopmund (one of Africa’s many adventure capitals), are breathtaking sights to behold. All of these locations feature on the 19-day Cape Town to Victoria Falls, the Small Group Adventure Camping Experience, also including wildlife viewing in Botswana’s Chobe National Park, a slow paced scenic mokoro safari on the Okavango Delta, and back in Namibia, game drives in Etosha National Park. SAVE 15% (£327pp) from £1,858pp (no single supplement) + Adventure Pass from £325pp including all highlights, transport, camping accommodation, most meals, services of a tour leader and driver. Starts Cape Town – ends Livingstone. Year-round scheduled departures. Full tour price £2,185pp.ADVERTISEMENT
Kenya, known as the “Land of the Original Safari,” is widely regarded as Africa’s most iconic wildlife destination. While there are no guarantees, there is a good chance of seeing all five of the Big Five within its national parks, but twinning Kenya’s Masai Mara and Tanzania’s neighbouring Serengeti is the ultimate combination. Proving that these bucket list countries can be visited on a budget, Acacia’s 13-day Small Group Kenya & Tanzania Accommodated Adventure combines classic Africa with stays in inexpensive, yet superior lodges and tented camps. The complete itinerary includes game drives in the Masai Mara (the thrill of the annual migration best viewed from July through September), the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, a Masai Culture village walk in Arusha, and a stay on the Spice island of Zanzibar. SAVE 10% (£211pp) from £1,904pp (no single supplement) + Adventure Pass from £1,159pp including all highlights, transport, accommodation (including comfortable lodges and tented camps, plus bush camping in the Serengeti/Ngorongoro), most meals, services of a tour leader and driver.  Starts Nairobi – ends Dar es Salaam. Year-round scheduled departures. Full tour price £2,115pp.

All prices exclude return flight. Discount excludes Adventure Pass. All offers subject to availability. Acacia Africa’s Small Group Adventure Camping and Small Group Adventure Accommodated Tours are aimed at travellers aged 18+.  Acacia offers pre and post accommodation and a wide selection of city breaks and short stays.
