    Cathay Cargo Receives IATA’s CEIV Lithium Batteries Certification

    Cathay Cargo and the Cathay Cargo Terminal have received the IATA Center of Excellence for Independent Validators Lithium Batteries (CEIV Li-batt) certification. With this new accreditation, both Cathay Cargo and the Cathay Cargo Terminal each now hold the full set of CEIV certifications, joining CEIV Pharma, CEIV Fresh and CEIV Live Animals.
    CEIV Li-batt addresses an important issue for the air-cargo industry. The incorrect charging, handling and mislabelling of shipments containing lithium-ion batteries can endanger people and property, and has caused fires. This has become a bigger issue for the air-cargo industry as e-commerce continues to grow, increasing the incidence of undeclared or misdeclared shipments.
    The airline-specific CEIV Li-batt accreditation joins Cathay Cargo’s existing mitigations for lithium-ion battery shipments, which include a full range of fire containment bags (FCBs) and fire-resistant containers (FRCs). Cathay Cargo also operates its Cargo Agent Operation Programme and an additional indemnity scheme for mislabelled dangerous goods as the supply chain becomes more complex.
    The Cathay Cargo Terminal at Hong Kong International Airport has also independently achieved its own CEIV Li-batt accreditation for cargo terminal operators, ensuring customers’ shipments receive a safe and assured end-to-end experience, whether travelling to, from or through Hong Kong.
    Director Cargo Tom Owen said: “The safe carriage of lithium-ion batteries is a core focus of our cargo business and we have introduced a coherent and far-reaching series of safety protocols with our customers and operational teams to mitigate risks over the past few years. The CEIV Li-batt accreditation now achieved by both Cathay Cargo and the Cathay Cargo Terminal will give further confidence to our customers that we adhere to the highest standards of handling in the industry.”ADVERTISEMENTCEIV Li-batt formalises baseline standards to improve the competency and quality management in the handling and carriage of lithium-ion batteries across the logistics supply chain. The accreditation is also available to shippers, forwarders and cargo terminal operators. The entire programme is underpinned by the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) and the IATA Lithium Battery Shipping Regulations (LBSR), and adds training, assessment and validation that demonstrate compliance with these regulations.

    Dubai Holding appears to have acquired troubled Dubai Pearl plot

    Dubai Holding, the emirate’s government-owned investment corp, appears to have acquired the Dubai Pearl site.It was previously rumoured that the holding company took on the site after its demolition began in January 2023. An updated information board outside the project now lists Dubai Holding as the client. It is unclear when the sign was updated.Consultants are listed as AECOM – a major global construction consulting firm, involved in many of Saudi Arabia’s giga-projects. Contractors are down as Al Areesh Wrecking and Demolition Works – suggesting the structure remains destined for continued demolition.
    In early 2023, The Financial Times, along with other media, reported rumours Dubai Holding had the winning bid for the failed project, said to be working with First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) on new plans.Dubai Pearl is an on-again-off-again US$10 billion mega-project that was first unveiled in 2002. The brakes were first slammed on in 2006 before being bought by Abu Dhabi-based Al Fahim Group from Qatar’s Omnix Group in 2007. Then, in 2008, it came to an end once more.
    The Pearl Dubai masterplan involved four towers based around a large podium, complete with 1,490 apartments, seven five-star hotels, over 60 restaurants and a 1,600-seat theatre.
    The scheme was to be financed by off-plan sales and funds provided by the Al Fahim family and others. In 2008, the investment arm of Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) promised to buy US$800m of space within the project but quickly backed out.

    Greek PM Announces Free Stay in 2024 for Evacuated Tourists: ‘Rhodes is Back!’Greece offers free trips to tourists who have had their holidays cut short due to wildfires.
    In July, parts of the island were damaged by fire for days, destroying homes and hotels. Thousands were forced to evacuate.
    Officials said that 20,000 people, including thousands of tourists, fled the fires.
    The Greek Prime Minister KyriakosMitsotakis acknowledged on Wednesday (2 August), ITV’s Good Morning Britain, the inconvenience caused by the fires to visitors.
    “For all those whose holiday was cut short as a result of wildfires, the Greek government in cooperation with local authorities will offer one week of free holidays on Rhodes, next spring, the next fall, so that we make sure they come back to the island and enjoy its natural beauty,” he mentioned.ADVERTISEMENTThe deal is still not clear, nor are the details of flights included. However, it appears that the summer peak season will be excluded.
    Mitsotakis said that while fires are not uncommon on Rhodes but their intensity is increasing due to climate change. He also praised Rhodes’ people for their “unbelievable” hospitality.
    About 2.6 million tourists visited Rhodes in the past year. Tourism accounts for about a quarter (or more) of Greece’s gross domestic product.
    Is it safe for me to travel to Rhodes in the summer?Tourism officials and government officials have assured travellers that the island of South Aegean is ready to welcome their return.
    In a Monday statement, the Greek Tourism Ministry stated that the life on the island was returning to normal.
    “Rhodes is back! We are pleased to announce that the operational state of emergency has expired on the island of Rhodes,” it mentioned.
    The Tourism Ministry added that Greek residents and the Greek State “look forward to continue to offer their care, unique hospitality and to foreign visitors”.
    The Hotel Association of Rhodes announced that the island was now “fully functional, and welcoming thousands of tourists every day”. The hope is that all accommodation will be reopened soon.
    A return of personal items for guests evacuated because of fires was also announced. The luggage will be returned at no cost if the hotel where they stayed is a member.
    George Hatzimarkos, regional governor for the South Aegean region, said that Rhodes was returning stronger.
    He said that “limited” restoration projects were underway and tourism was quickly returning to “business as usual”.
    “We fully reassure our visitors that they can reliably enjoy the exceptional travel experiences and the authentic hospitality that beautiful Rhodes offers as a top-notch (sic) global tourism destination.”

    Embraer deliveries increase 47% in 2Q23

    Embraer delivered a total of 47 jets in the second quarter of 2023, of which 17 were commercial aircraft and 30 were executive jets (19 light jets and 11 midsize jets).During the year, the company delivered a total of 62 aircraft (24 commercial and 38 executive). The second quarter deliveries were 47% higher than in the same period from 2022. In the first half of 2023, the volume has increased 35% compared to 2022, when 46 jets have been delivered. Compared to the second quarter of 2022, deliveries volume increased by 55% in Commercial Aviation and 43% in Executive Jets. The firm order backlog ended the period at US$ 17.3 billion.
    In Commercial Aviation, American Airlines signed a firm order with Embraer for seven new E175s. The aircraft will be operated by the subsidiary Envoy Air. With deliveries to begin 4Q23, Envoy’s fleet of E-Jets will grow to over 141 aircraft by the end of 2024.
    Embraer also received a firm order from Binter for six E195-E2s, which will bring Binter’s E2 fleet to 16 jets when deliveries are completed. This order will be included in Embraer’s backlog once all contractual contingencies are cleared.
    Malaysia’s SKS Airways closed an agreement to add ten E195-E2 jets to its fleet. In addition, SKS joined the Pool Program to support aircraft to be operated in Southeast Asia. Scoot, a low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, is also adding nine E190-E2s to its portfolio. And Royal Jordanian Airlines reached an agreement to introduce eight E190-E2 and E195-E2 jets into its operations, with deliveries starting in the 4Q23. All three agreements involved contracts with the leasing company Azorra.
    Four E175s began to operate with Star Air, an Indian airline that already operates E-Jets. Star Air has also extended its Pool Program contract to include the E175s in its fleet.ADVERTISEMENTIn addition to Star Air and SKS Airways, Embraer Services & Support signed Pool Program contract extensions with Rex Group (Australia) and Amelia (France). Another highlight of the quarter for the business unit was the announcement of 20 E-Jets P2F for the Lanzhou Group. This is the first Embraer P2F agreement in China.
    In Executive Aviation, NetJets signed a contract with Embraer for the acquisition of up to 250 Praetor 500 jet options. The deal is valued at more than US$ 5 billion, and deliveries are expected to begin in 2025.
    For Embraer Defense & Security, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with Saab to position the C-390 Millennium as the preferred solution for the tactical air transport requirements of the Swedish Air Force and in the search for opportunities for potential Gripen customers in Latin America.

    Heathrow Launches Groundbreaking Trial of Low Carbon Concrete, Targeting 50% Emission Reduction

    Heathrow has kickstarted a ground-breaking new trial, exploring the viability of lower carbon concrete, which cuts emissions by 50% compared to a conventional concrete. The initiative followed Heathrow’s sponsorship of a PhD candidate at the University of Surrey who undertook three years of lab work to reach this point. The trial has been designed to test the concrete’s durability and longevity in a true to life airport setting and is one of the first of its kind at any airport in the world.
    As part of Heathrow’s holistic sustainability strategy – Heathrow 2.0 – the airport is committed to reducing on the ground emissions as well as those in the air. With at least 6% of global carbon emissions each year linked to concrete production, Ecocem and Cemex’s innovative concrete solution has the potential to radically reduce the carbon output of infrastructure projects at the airport. The aim is for the trial’s findings to be used to set out a blueprint that other airports, keen to reduce carbon from all facets of their operation, can follow. This trial is the first of a number being planned that will test and trial other low carbon concrete materials on the market. It is intended that the outcomes of these trials can be used to reduce embedded carbon in a number of projects being delivered by Ferrovial Construction and Dyer & Butler at Heathrow.
    The project, led by Jacobs and implemented by Cemex and Ecocem will see four different applications trialled in a pouring site located close to the control tower. These will replicate use in a range of typical airport infrastructure applications, including airfield pavements, encompassing runways and taxiways as well as reinforced pit cover slabs and other ancillary concrete types. With aircraft taking off and landing close to every 45 seconds at Heathrow, it is critical the concrete undergoes rigorous testing to ensure its strength and durability can withstand the pressures of the one of the world’s busiest airports.
    Nigel Milton, Chief of Staff and Carbon at Heathrow said: “Heathrow is once again serving as a testbed for ground-breaking technologies, demonstrating global leadership with regards to sustainable travel. We’re committed to cutting carbon emissions on the ground as well as in the air and we’re delighted to be hosting one of the first airport trials in the world to test lower carbon alternatives. I hope that this trial will help radically transform the built environment at Heathrow in the years to come.”
    Richard Moore, Europe Aviation Engineering Lead at Jacobs said: “Jacobs are delighted to have been the technical consultant on the Low Carbon Concrete initiative at Heathrow since its inception in 2018. Today’s trial is an exciting milestone in the development of lower carbon infrastructure solutions at the airport. It is the culmination of four years of research and planning towards these initial trials which will form the foundation of further work exploring other lower carbon products and materials. Testing the materials in a range of airport infrastructure applications, not just runway and taxiway pavements, allows us to maximise the opportunity to reduce embedded carbon in a wide variety of concrete types. As the first company at Heathrow to gain PAS2080 certification for Carbon Management, we have been able to deliver projects with the lowest Pavement Quality Concrete CO2e compliant with the high standard specification at the airport.     Aviation Day 2023 Kicks Off in Hong Kong, Gathering Global Industry Leaders

    Aviation Day 2023, a signature conference for the global aviation industry, kicked off in Hong Kong. Co-hosted by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), the two-day event held at AsiaWorld Expo was attended by more than 1,000 aviation industry professionals from around the world.

The Government, together with the Airport Authority, are transforming our airport into an “Airport City”, under which the HKIA will be developed into a node of various economic activities with aviation as its core business, making our airport a new engine which will propel the growth of Hong Kong and the GBA as a whole. The Government is also striving to establish Hong Kong as an aircraft leasing and services hub by providing tax concessions so as to attract more aircraft leasing companies to come to Hong Kong; and supporting manpower training for the aviation industry as well as welcoming talents from abroad with expertise and experience in the industry to join us.”

    Nantes’ New Rail Initiative to Expand Accommodation Options for Rugby World Cup

    With just over six weeks to go until the first of four Rugby World Cup matches at Nantes’ La Beaujoire stadium, attending fans are encouraged to opt for accommodation in the Chateaubriant area and travel to the matches by TER (Regional Express Train), thanks to a new initiative put in place especially for the Championship.
    n order to extend the available accommodation options north of the city, access to the stadium will be facilitated from La Chapelle-sur-Erdre, Sucé-sur-Erdre, Nort-sur-Erdre, Abbaretz, Issé and Chateaubriant, all served by the T1 railway line. The frequency and times of trains on this Nantes–Chateaubriant line will be adapted to the different matches. The closest stop to the stadium will be Haluchère-Batignolles, around 1km away.
    Thanks to this initiative, hotels, campsites, gîtes and B&Bs in the Chateaubriant area (almost 70km north of Nantes) will be only one hour by train from Haluchère-Batignolles. It will therefore be possible to travel to the stadium from these towns and return after the match, with adapted timetables before, during and after matches (even those finishing at 11pm).
    What’s more, journeys between Nantes and La Chapelle-sur-Erdre are free at weekends. For journeys beyond La Chapelle-sur-Erdre, choose the ‘billet live’ ticket type (available to match ticket holders only), which provides TER tickets at €5 per journey to attend certain events and festivals in the Pays de la Loire region.
