Saga Holidays’ new campaign challenges perceptions of the over-50’s

Saga Holidays last week launched its biggest integrated brand campaign for 2023 to support the launch of its new ‘Tailor-Made Travel by Saga’ holidays product.Stuart Beamish, Group Chief Customer Officer said: “As Saga continues to operate as a champion for people over 50, we are taking this opportunity to bust open the myths associated with our audience. Our aim as a brand and through this advert is to challenge perceptions and to reflect our customers as the experienced individuals they are.”
The ad, called ‘You’re not wrong’, launches with a hero 60-second version featuring actor Nicholas Farrell, who appeared in the brand’s ‘Experience is Everything’ campaign.
View and download the new Saga you’re not wrong advert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kTP10EVyUQ&feature=youtu.be
While assumptions may suggest that older people like sedate trips, the advert follows Farrell through a range of adventurous experiences, and, adopting Saga’s witty, British tone, gently pokes fun at and challenges the perceptions of how those over 50 like to travel.
Farrell begins, knelt respectfully in a Japanese tea ceremony: “Saga Holidays. What springs to mind? Experience tells me you probably think we’re constantly stopping for tea.” As he is handed a tea bowl, which he carefully cups, he says: “It’s not entirely unfair”.ADVERTISEMENTp >It goes on: “You think we like just pootling along” as the camera follows him in a fast-moving dune buggy over the sands of Dubai before cutting to Nicholas enjoying a massage in Bali: “You probably think we love regular afternoon lie downs”.
Next the camera is close-up to Farrell as he says: “We’re often found in slow moving groups” and as the shot pans out to show he’s sat in a jeep watching a herd of giraffe in Africa: “Well, you’re not wrong”.
Then the viewer joins a South American festival full of music and dancing and a local man holding a large flag. Nicholas follows him, saying: “And more than anything, we love to follow someone holding a flag”.
Finally, as he enjoys a glass of wine in a South African vineyard Farrell, with a lifted eyebrow, comments: “Yes, a holiday with Saga is everything you probably thought it was. And a little bit more.”
John Constable, CEO of Saga Travel Group, said: “We know there are many incorrect preconceptions about what a Saga holiday is and the people who take them, so we’re setting the record straight.”
“Our customers tell us they want exciting experiences in fascinating destinations. They love adventure, culture, wildlife and beauty, which our new ‘Tailor-Made Travel by Saga’ holidays deliver in spades. We wanted to create a witty juxtaposition between assumption and reality to make that point and we think this new advert with the superb Nicholas Farrell does that brilliantly.”

The integrated campaign was devised by agency of record, VCCP alongside VCCP Media who planned and executed the media buying.
Jim Thornton, Executive Creative Director at VCCP, said: “The gap between the perception of a Saga holiday and the reality is as wide as the Grand Canyon – which, of course, you can visit as part of a Saga Tailor Made Holiday. It has been nothing short of a joy for me and the VCCP team to firmly bury those preconceptions, thanks to the boundless talent and wit of Nicholas Farrell in front of the camera, and Tony Barry behind it.”

He continued, “With this country’s deep ties to the sea, today’s inauguration is the perfect embodiment of the Year of Sustainability’s theme ‘Today for Tomorrow,’ and is our commitment to forging a sustainable future for our future generations.”
Led by a team of dedicated marine scientists, zoologists and subject matter experts in research, rescue and animal care, the center will play an important role in research and conservation efforts in the region. The center’s Research team will conduct fundamental and applied studies focusing on the marine ecology of the Arabian Gulf covering topics such as marine biodiversity, ecosystem resilience, sensitive wildlife conservation, critical habitats restoration, fisheries, pollution and wildlife health. ADVERTISEMENTChairman of SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, Scott Ross, said “We are very proud of our partnership with Miral in bringing this first-of-its-kind center to the UAE. Today’s inauguration is many years in the making and we cannot be more excited to make this official announcement and continue our work together to advance the conservation of the region’s amazing and extraordinarily diverse marine life. Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue aims to rescue sick, injured and orphaned marine animals in the Arabian Gulf and to provide life-saving rehabilitation with the goal of returning healthy animals back to their natural habitats. To facilitate this goal, the center will have a fleet of rescue vehicles that includes two custom-made rescue boats and a state-of-the art veterinary hospital for triage of animals in critical condition. The center will also have over 25 rescue pools, from large pools for marine mammals to smaller pools for fish, invertebrates and marine reptiles. Two of the larger pools are equipped with lifting floors, which will make access for treatment easier and less disruptive for the animals. An onsite lab at the center is also equipped with advanced rescue and rehabilitation capabilities including the ability to conduct in-house pathology analysis for wildlife.

The center will also focus on applied research studies for marine ecosystem restoration with aquaculture-based projects including fish propagation, seagrass cultivation, coral reproduction as well as field projects focusing on critical habitats of Arabian Gulf waters such as seagrass, mangroves, oyster beds and coral reefs. This research will only be made possible through some of the best subject matter researchers and scientists and by utilizing the state-of-the-art laboratories and infrastructure of the center, including three dry laboratories, a wet laboratory, and a 345 m3 aquaculture facility which includes live feed culture rooms, brood stock pools and larvae culture pools. The center’s research team will conduct most of these studies by use of its 12.5 m research vessel decked with the latest field equipment.
As part of its commitment to enhancing public knowledge and inspiring the next generation of marine biologists, the center’s Education department will bring together a skilled team of marine scientists and a dedicated team of marine animal rescue experts. Along with a joint SeaWorld Abu Dhabi team of expert educators, the center has a dry classroom and a wet classroom fully equipped for scientific experimental activities in addition to a high-tech auditorium which can seat 160 people. Airlines shouldn’t have to compromise on ancillary revenues, says InterLnkd

Last week, Finnair announced it was joining the growing list of airlines discontinuing their in-flight and pre-order retail sales. This includes cosmetics, gifts, and accessories. The airline cited low customer demand and the need to reduce overall take-off weight as the main reasons for its decision.According to InterLnkd – which enables travel companies to earn a new and free revenue stream from fashion, beauty and retail products – airlines should not have to compromise on ancillary revenue opportunities.
CEO Barry Klipp said: “The news from Finnair shows in-flight and pre-order ‘collect onboard’ retail is slowly becoming a relic of a bygone era, as airlines struggle to reconcile the costly and complex logistics with their drive to improve fuel efficiency and streamline their ancillary strategies.
“The reality that many airlines overlook, however, is that putting an end to traditional in-flight retail doesn’t mean saying goodbye to ancillary revenues from fashion, beauty and retail products. In fact, airlines can now capitalise on the lucrative holiday retail market at no cost – as long as they know exactly what their travellers need and want.
“The average person spends £270 on fashion, beauty and retail products for their upcoming holiday, mostly through online purchases from their favourite brands. Rather than stocking and selling a limited selection of products with on-board or airport collection, airlines should seek to earn revenue by offering customers the items they actually need and want for the holidays they have booked.
“In a world of unlimited choice and next-day delivery, choosing from a handful of brands and only getting them on departure day doesn’t sound as attractive anymore. This is why we’ve developed an ancillary revenue solution that helps airlines curate the most relevant products for a customer’s booking, from over 1000 major brands across fashion, beauty and retail – enabling them to a revenue stream from the items they would purchase anyway.ADVERTISEMENT“The key to this zero-risk approach is simple: using personalisation to stimulate demand. While traditional pre-order and in-flight retail may not have been sustainable for the likes of Finnair, offering customers the right products at the right time is much more effective in delivering the motivation to purchase.”
