First, the roads disappear. Then, the noise. A forest that has been cared for for generations
For the Ese Eja people — whose name literally means “people” — this forest is not a destination: it is their home. For generations they have lived in close relationship with the forest, learning its rhythms, its species and its balance. Today that ancestral knowledge is at the heart of the way in which the territory is protected and shared.
The community protects more than 9,500 hectares of Amazon rainforest along the Tambopata River, a biologically extraordinary and culturally significant territory. To visit Kuaii Amazonas is to enter that world with respect, accompanied by guides who grew up here and know every trail, every bird call, every footprint in the mud.
An alliance that changed the rules of the game
In 1996, the community and Rainforest Expeditions decided to write a different story together. The community contributed its territory, its knowledge and its long-term vision; the company, its experience, its investment and its global reach. From that union was born Posada Amazonas, a lodge owned by the community.
Three decades later, that alliance is recognized as one of the most successful models of co-managed tourism in the world. Today, 75% of the lodge’s profits are distributed directly to the families of the community, who also manage almost the entire operation. The goal is clear: to reach 100% community management. When a traveler arrives at Kuaii Amazonas, he is not a spectator: he becomes part of that story.
